Brain Matter corrected Quantification of Phosphomono- and Phosphodiesters in the Brain of Patients with Schizophrenia

چکیده
Introduction Since the finding of an altered phosophomono and -diester metabolism in cell membranes of postmortem brains of schizophrenic patients [1] several studies have used P-MRS for in vivo investigation of schizophrenic groups [2-4] in different brain regions, partly with contradictory results. Because of the scalar coupling between H and P in the molecules the resonances of phospho-monoand/or phosphodiester (Phosphorylethanolamine PE, Phosphocholine PC and Gylcero-phosphorylethanolamine GPE, Glycerophosphocholine GPC) show a multiplet structure overlying the broad phospholipid-component, their concentrations are difficult to quantify reliably. We used a 3D-whole head RINEPT sequence together with point-spread function (PSF) corrected tissue segmentation for robust absolute quantification.

Brain Volume Estimation Enhancement by Morphological Image Processing Tools
Background: Volume estimation of brain is important for many neurological applications. It is necessary in measuring brain growth and changes in brain in normal/abnormal patients. Thus, accurate brain volume measurement is very important. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for volume quantification due to excellent levels of image resolution and between-tissue contrast. St...
متن کاملThe pattern of brain perfusion SPECT in non-medicated schizophrenic patients
Introduction: Studies with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) have revealed inconsistent changes of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in schizophrenia. Some studies investigated the rCBF and its relationship with psychopathology, positive and negative symptoms in treated patients. However, there is a little information about the pattern of rCBF in ...
متن کاملThe Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery
Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...

Purpose: This study is designed to determine the sexual dimorphism pattern in volume of the cerebral hemispheres and lateral ventricles in schizophrenia using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to compare it with normal sexual dimorphism pattern in healthy brains. Materials and Methods: This study is performed on 29 healthy volunteers (21 males, 8 females) and 29 patients suffered from schiz...
متن کاملPathological Assessment of Brain White Matter in Relapsing-Remitting MS Patients using Quantitative Magnetization Transfer Imaging
Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by lesions in the white matter (WM) of the central nervous system. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most specific and sensitive method for diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. However, the ability of conventional MRI to show histopathologic heterogeneity of MS lesions is insufficient. Quantitative magnetization transfer imaging (qMTI) is a rel...
